Civic Ceremonial is a re imagining of traditional civic regalia – items used in official ceremonies to mark local and national milestones. The pieces merge traditional craft techniques, such as basketry and heritage metalworking, to create new ceremonial objects.

Often borrowing from mythic or religious symbolism, these civic tools represent a human-scale form of power rooted in democratic community consensus rather than top-down authority. The power they grant is often modest: spreading good news, celebrating local achievements and centenary birthdays, or marking national commemorations. Yet even within the local sphere, small power can sometimes spark significant change.

This work was commissioned by Mostyn Gallery with support from the Colwinston Trust to accompany the National Gallery’s NG200: Triumph of Art, a national project by artist Jeremy Deller, as part of NG200, Bicentenary celebrations.
